New Artists to Love in 2k10

We all know the feeling. It's a knowing glance from someone across a room, something ever so subtle, yet in that moment the deepest calm and content washes over you. No words are necessary; it's all in the eyes. Maybe it took you by surprise or perhaps it's what you've been searching for all along. You simply didn't know where to look. This is the profound power of a new friendship, one formed in the innocence of curiosity and resulting in a discovery of more in common than you were comfortable in sharing. This intimacy is one of the true beauties of discovering new music. A genre you had never encountered or had written off suddenly saves the day, soundtracking a period of your life that had previously been wandering aimlessly for answers. The only certainty is that something clicks, and this kind of connection always remains.

Some of these artists will be familiar, some will be new, but all of them had new releases in 2010. Either way, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship. [Videos after the jump]

Delorean released their debut full-length Subiza in June 2010. The album melds gorgeous love songs with danceable beats that showcase their distinct Barcelona influences.

Twin Shadow is undoubtedly the product of a David Bowie - Morrissey rendezvous in the 80's, but his take on this sound feels undoubtedly modern and unique, with elements of electronic music  and the production touch of Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor allowing frontman George Lewis Jr. (and his incredible hairstyles/stache) to spread his nu-wave soulful vision around the world.

Tennis became the cutest new band in indie music with their single Marathon.

Here is the newest preview off of that album, entitled "Take Me Somewhere"

Warpaint garnered a lot of buzz with their EP Exquisite Corpse and continued to pick up steam throughout the summer with their festival appearances. Their eerie psychedelic rock evolved further on their debut album The Fool, which was produced by everyone's favorite ex-Chili Pepper John Frusciante. This video of "Undertow" highlights their inimitable swagger and trademark harmonies.

The Drums round out this group of newcomers. Hailing from Brooklyn, the Drums sound more like they've spent their whole lives on a beach somewhere. Their breakthrough came with the instant-classic "Let's Go Surfing"from their EP Summertime!

Their knack for catchy pop songs continued on their LP The Drums. It stands as one of my favorite releases of the year with it's constant bubbly hooks, sublimely simple riffs, and sing-along choruses. The dancing of lead vocalist Jonathan Pierce in this video for "Best Friend" will keep you coming back for more.
